Basing Colour Recipe 03 – Skulls

As part of the basing series, this is a 90mm round base, which will be for a Space Marine Primaris Invictor Warsuit. It’s going to be one of my Golden Demon 2020 entries.

For the third part of the tutorial we’re going to paint the 2 skulls on the base.

Paints used:

Citadel:

  • Black Spray Primer
  • Morghast Bone
  • Agrax Earthshade
  • Ushabti Bone
  • Ceramite White
  • Longbeard Grey

First up, let’s have a quick look at the finished skulls:

With the black base spray already down, I started by covering both skulls with Morghast Bone:

Once dry, I gave them a wash of Agrax Earthshade to fill the cracks, eyes, nose, teeth lines and so on. Don’t hold back with this stuff here. You can see I pooled a fair bit in the eye-sockets.

After that I went back over the raised, main areas with Morghast bone again, to bring them back up, leaving the shade in the recesses and holes.

I then went in with a highlight in upper-facing areas and outlines with Ushabti Bone:

I even took a bit of Ceramite White to the upper-most highlighted areas, just to bring the colour of the bone up before washing again.

And then washed them all in Agrax Earthshade to bring them back down a bit, and to tie all the highlights together (and keep those eye-sockets nice and dark.

Then, to tie them in with the rubbly base, I gave them a very light drybrush with Longbeard Grey.

And that’s it!

Next up we’ll cover the helmet and lasgun before the base is complete.
